How this internet speed test works

This browser test measures the path between your device and our test server. It is designed to show sustained, usable performance rather than only the fastest moment of a transfer. Server distance, routing, Wi-Fi, VPNs, other traffic, and the browser can all affect the result.

Accuracy, data use, and privacy

What the result represents

The test warms up the connection, adapts from one to four parallel transfers, and uses the median sustained rate. Loaded ping runs during download to reveal bufferbloat. A different provider can report another number because it uses a different server, route, transfer size, stream count, or peak-speed calculation.

Transfer and storage limits

A complete run uses no more than about 100 MB: up to 64 MB down, 32 MB up, and a small warm-up. Slower connections use less. Payloads are random, discarded immediately, and individual results are not stored. Each signed test session expires quickly and cannot exceed its transfer allowance.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this different from Speedtest or Fast.com?

Server location still matters, but this test now uses adaptive parallel transfers and reports the median sustained rate after warm-up. It also reports idle vs loaded latency, jitter, and a usable-internet score instead of treating peak Mbps as the whole result.

What is latency under load?

Idle ping is measured while the line is quiet. Loaded ping is measured while a download is running. The gap is bufferbloat: extra delay from a full router or modem queue. A 200 Mbps line with 300 ms loaded ping feels worse than a 40 Mbps line that stays under 50 ms.

Why might the number be lower than my ISP plan?

We measure the path your browser uses to reach this site, after TCP slow start, using on-the-wire size and elapsed time. Wi-Fi, VPN, browser extensions, and a busy household all reduce typical speed. Plan speeds are a maximum under ideal conditions, and this is not a test to your ISP’s nearest server.

Do you store my speed test?

No. The run happens in your browser. Transfer payloads are discarded after the request. Results stay on this page unless you copy them yourself.

How much data does a test use?

A full run takes about 20–30 seconds and uses at most about 100 MB: up to 64 MB for download and 32 MB for upload, plus a small warm-up. Slower connections stop on time and use less. Payloads are incompressible random data so proxies cannot inflate the result.
